Lyrics: Root of All Evil
Transcribed by: Rod Laughton, David Herbert
With the next month's single, the band has happily returned to the more blatantly political themes that coloured their earlier work, particularly "Welcome To .." and some of the track's from Paul, Hamster, and Sean's earlier garage band "The Starlings" (or some bird name or other). Anyway, here's a pretty good swag at the polemical lyrics:
Root of All Evil
(Heaton/Rotheray 2001)
If Euro replaces the Pound, it's still likely to be shiny and round
The rich may switch the way they feel rich
But not the man who's alive
Or the man who was drowned
"Keep the Pound," only make sense
If you're worth more than 99 pence
Those who have a lot and those who have not
Will make Francs, Marks, Pesetas and Cents
If money is the root of all evil
What does that make love of the Pound?
We'll be eating frogs and modelling clogs
And you'll be hunting French and Dutch with a hound
Now our nation goes to the vote
So our country has its name on the note
Same set of people, same vote
Leave their name in the back of their coat
Heads or tails cannot be won
On whose head graced, whatever was fun
If Queen's head's not on money they've got
It's still business and money's still fun
If money is the root of all evil
What does that make love of the Pound?
We'll be eating Frogs and Modelling clogs
And you'll be hunting French and Dutch with a hound
Now our nation goes to the vote
So our country has its name on the note
Same set of people, same vote
Leave their name in the back of their coat
Now our nation goes to the vote
So our country has its name on the note
Same set of people, same vote
Leave their name in the back of their coat

Don't like money? Can't stand the stuff? Then take a listen of the new single "Root of All Evil" and then turn your back on filthy lucre forever. Here's a suggestion: just pack it all in a non-descript envelope, and send it to us. We'll destroy it. We promise.
p.s. This is a lo-fi version of the single that is no substitute for going out and buying it, and the Solid Bronze greatest hits album that it will be featured on. The future of the band, good taste, and our way of life depends on your stepping up to the plate here, mates.

Red Eye Reports: The South on BBC's Parkinson
Courtesy: Chris Bounds, Southmartin
This Saturday, 6th October, at 9:55 pm, the Beautiful South will be featured on BBC One's talk show "Parkinson" along with Jim Davidson, Jamie Oliver, and Elle McPherson.
The Beautiful South were playing with the usual lineup, except Damon Butcher was absent so Tony the trumpet player was playing keyboards.
They sang along live to a pre-recorded backing track with Paul singing lead on Rotterdam. To the RED EYE'S ear, the backing track seemed slightly different to the usual version, so maybe there's an alternate "Paul" version for the "Sold Bronze" album?
They also sang Old Red Eyes.

Listen and Vote: Root of All Evil
| The new TBS single, "Root of All Evil", has turned up on BBC Radio 2. Steve Wright's roundtable dissed and dismissed it, but you can listen for yourself and vote online to prove them wrong. |
